SHIP Training:

In order to qualify for full membership of the SHIP® Foundation, the candidate must be registered as a Clinical, Counselling or Educational Psychologist with the HPCSA, be in possession of at least a Master’s Degree in Psychology, and either be a registered facilitator or a registered trainer in the specific specialist category of SHIP® membership as allowed by their scope of practice.

Qualification Criteria

The general criteria for qualifying as facilitator in the specialist fields of SHIPiC®, SHIP®forAdolescents, SHIP®forAdults, and SHIP®forAcuteTrauma are as follows:

  • A CIT cannot register as facilitator within the 24 month period following initial registration as psychologist.
  • A registered facilitator may not be under 30 years of age.
  • Must have completed their SHIP® Frame psychotherapy with a trainer.
  • CIT can only gain facilitator status in the scope of practice and HPCSA registration category.
  • Ten files for supervision have to be presented to the trainer for registration as facilitator.
  • Must attend two SHIP® Workshops over a period of two consecutive years.
  • Present a paper at a workshop in conjunction with the CIT’s trainer in the CIT’s scope of practice and specific category of qualification and HPCSA registration category. The proposed paper must be completed and presented to the relevant trainer and one other trainer before 30th May of the year of presentation.  The paper must be in English and according to American Psychological Association (hereinafter referred to as “APA”) standards.  Practical Guidelines and the APA standards for writing and presentation of the paper will be provided to all potential facilitators.

To maintain facilitator status in any specialist registration category after qualifying the following are required:

SHIPiC® Facilitator (SHIP®inChildren)

The criteria for qualifying in the specialist field of a SHIPiC® Facilitator (SHIP®inChildren) are as follows:

  • Comply with all the general criteria for qualifying as a facilitator.
  • Ten files for supervision have to be presented to the SHIPiC®
  • Present a paper at a workshop in conjunction with the CIT’s trainer.
SHIP®forAdolescents Facilitator

Dr Irene Strydom is the trainer for SHIPiC®.

The criteria for qualifying in the specialist field of a SHIP®forAdolescents Facilitator (clients under 18 years of age) are as follows:

  • Comply with all the general criteria for qualifying as a facilitator.
  • Present 10 files for supervision to the intermediate trainer.
SHIP®forAdults Facilitator

Ms Marlene Flett is the intermediate trainer for SHIP®forAdolescents.

The criteria for qualifying in the specialist field of a SHIP®forAdults Facilitator are as follows:

  • Comply with all the general criteria for qualifying as a facilitator.
  • Ten files for supervision have to be presented to a trainer.
  • Present a paper at a workshop in conjunction with the CIT’s trainer.
SHIP®forAcuteTrauma Facilitator

Dr Elna Schoeman-Steenkamp, Dr Irene Strydom, Dr JO Steenkamp and Dr Jaco van der Walt are the SHIP®forAdults Trainers.

The criteria for qualifying in the specialist field of a SHIP®forAcuteTrauma Facilitator are as follows:

  • A colleague should already be registered as a SHIP®forAdults Facilitator.
  • Ten files for supervision have to be presented to the trainer.  [This is in addition to the 10 files that have been submitted for registration as a SHIP®forAdults Facilitator.]
  • Present a paper at a workshop in conjunction with the CIT’s trainer.
SHIP®forAcuteTrauma Trainer

Dr Jaco van der Walt is the SHIP®forAcuteTrauma Trainer.

The criteria for qualifying as a trainer and maintaining trainer status in the specialist fields of SHIPiC®, SHIP®forAdolescents, SHIP®forAdults, and SHIP®forAcuteTrauma are as follows (The categories of psychologists’ registration for trainers are the same as for Facilitators):

  • A SHIP® Facilitator can not apply for trainership – the appointment of a trainer will depend on an invitee from the BM.
  • The qualifying trainer should be over the age of 40.
  • Be registered either as an Educational, Counselling or Clinical Psychologist with the HPCSA.
  • Be in possession of a Doctorate in Educational, Counselling or Clinical Psychology; the doctorate should be in the scope of practice of the applied trainership; and the doctorate does not allow the candidate the right to practice any SHIP® work outside of the candidate’s original registration and scope of practice with the HPCSA.
  • Be trained by a registered trainer in the category of registration.
  • Have accumulated 10,000 sessions in the category of proposed registration (SHIPiC®, SHIP®forAdolescents, SHIP®forAdults & SHIP®forAcuteTrauma) with clients in private practice from the date of Facilitator registration.
  • A facilitator can only register as a trainer after ten years from the date of facilitator registration.
  • The BM will scrutinise the application and an applicant may be refused trainer status at the discretion of the BM.  The BM reserves the right to request all records of the applicant.
  • Trainer status of the applicant can only be gained in the scope of practice and the registration category as a psychologist with the HPCSA.  A qualified trainer can thus only train CITs in his/her specific scope of practice and registration category as a psychologist at the HPCSA.
  • A qualifying Trainer has to present a mini workshop (1½ hours) in the specific category of registration at a SHIP® Workshop as stipulated by his/her Trainer.

To maintain trainer status in any specialist registration category after qualifying the following are required:

  • Trainers must maintain private practice status comprising no fewer than 50 hours of SHIP® per month in the category of registration in order not to forfeit their trainer status.
  • Trainers must remain actively involved in annual workshops and conferences as stipulated by the BM.
